Core Capabilities

Exposure Computer

Interactive zone placement system with visual representation. Adjust shadow, midtone, and highlight positions across the 11-zone scale from pure black to paper white. Real-time calculation of scene brightness range in stops.

Reciprocity Calculator

Compensate for film reciprocity failure during long exposures. Input metered time from 1 to 60 seconds, view reciprocity curve on graph, receive corrected exposure with stop adjustment values automatically.

Zone Atlas Reference

Complete visual guide to all 11 zones from 0 through X. Each zone includes description of texture and tone characteristics. Select zones for placement guidance during scene metering sessions.

Film Profile System

Store development data for different film stocks. Calculate adjusted development times based on scene range and desired zone compression or expansion. Profile-specific reciprocity curves for accurate long exposure work.

Saved Setup Library

Store up to 40 complete exposure configurations. Each setup preserves zone placements, film profile selection, brightness range, and development calculations. Quickly recall common lighting scenarios.

Scene Range Analysis

Visual bar chart shows exposure distribution across zones. Monitor latitude usage percentage to avoid exceeding film capability. Fall table displays exact stop values for shadow, midtone, and highlight zones.

Calculation Methodology

Tower Build implements the Ansel Adams Zone System with digital precision. Input spot meter readings in EV values or shutter speeds. The exposure computer maps readings to zones 0 through X, calculating scene brightness range in stops.

The zone board interface displays exposure distribution as color-coded segments on a circular dial. Orange segments indicate metered areas, gray shows unmetered zones. Adjust shadow and highlight placements by rotating zone markers along the gradient scale.

Development compensation is calculated using N minus and N plus formulas. When scene range exceeds film latitude, the app suggests development time adjustments to compress or expand tonal zones. Fall tables show precise stop differences from middle gray for each critical zone.

Primary Function Zone System Exposure Metering
Zone Range 11 Zones (0 to X)
Reciprocity Range 1 to 60+ seconds
Saved Configurations 40 setup slots
Interface Mode Dark UI with high contrast
Input Method Manual spot meter readings
Development Calc N-2 through N+2 adjustments
Profile Support Custom film stocks

Operational Workflow Details

Exposure Planning Process

  • Take spot meter readings of shadow, midtone, and highlight areas in the scene
  • Input metered values into the exposure computer using EV wheel or time presets
  • Place readings on the zone scale by assigning each to desired zone position
  • Review scene brightness range calculation shown in stops between zones
  • Adjust zone placements if range exceeds film latitude capacity shown in percentage
  • Read suggested aperture and shutter speed combinations for chosen placement
  • Apply reciprocity correction if exposure time exceeds one second duration
  • Note development time adjustment recommendation from N calculation display

Advanced Features Operation

  • Create film profiles with custom reciprocity curves and development base times
  • Use zone atlas as reference guide when determining texture requirements
  • Save complete exposure setups with names for recurring lighting situations
  • Access fall tables showing exact stop values for all placed zones
  • Monitor latitude usage to ensure highlights and shadows remain printable
  • Adjust target highlight zone between VII and IX for different contrast preferences
  • Calculate development compensation automatically based on measured scene range
  • Export or recall saved configurations across multiple shooting sessions

Developer Background

Tower Build was created by experienced film photographers who needed precise zone system calculations in the field. The interface design prioritizes speed and accuracy under varying lighting conditions. All calculations follow classic Zone System methodology established by Ansel Adams, with modern conveniences like digital input and instant recalculation as readings change.
